On Saturday January 21st, 2023 Marshal Andy and I met at his residence in Loudon, Tennessee. I interviewed him and together we played an Eddy Arnold song simply entitled “Eddy’s Song.” As of the date of this post, we had made plans to record more, hence the name of this page Marshal Andy – The Loudon Sessions.

In Memory of Kathryn Yarbrough Smalls

Kathryn Yarbrough Smalls, age 85 of Loudon, passed away peacefully at her home, Sunday, July 1, 2018. Kathryn was born in Savannah, GA to the late Thomas L. and Eileen (McDonald) Yarbrough. She grew up in Charleston, SC and was drawn to the charisma of the unique southern town. While there, she loved modeling the newest fashions for the garment industry and enjoyed a career in finance serving the automotive industry until she married her life partner Andy, June 29, 1957. Together they enjoyed a love story that spanned 61 years. They were devoted to each other and had many adventures together, living and working in big cities and small towns. Kathryn and Andy had three children; she adored them and was a devoted mother as well. After the children were raised she launched a career in the cosmetic and fragrance industry in the Knoxville area. The Smalls’ were members of St. James Episcopal Church in Knoxville. These last years were spent calling Loudon their home, even though Kathryn stayed connected to her city of Charleston. She was a true southern lady, beautiful inside and out. She always greeted you with a warm smile and always treated others with kindness. When asked, Andy said “she possessed the innocence of a new born child and the beauty of a Southern Belle” If you were speaking to Kathryn, she would tell you that she was so proud to be the wife of “Marshal Andy”. In addition to her parents, Kathryn was preceded in death by her son, Thomas Scott Smalls; her daughter, Lucy Ann “Luann” Smalls and brother, Tommy Yarbrough. She is survived by her beloved husband, Andrew J. Smalls and beloved and devoted son, Drew J. Smalls, both of Loudon; brother in-law and wife, Joe and Betty Smalls, Conway, SC and a multitude of friends. Services honoring and remembering Kathryn Smalls will be held 5:00 PM Sunday, July 8th, McGill Click Chapel, with Rev. Jack Pennington officiating. Memorial Contributions may be directed to East Tennessee Public Television, 1611 E. Magnolia Ave. Knoxville, TN 37917. The family will receive friends 2:00 – 5:00 PM Sunday prior to the service at McGill Click Funerals & Cremations, 1366 Hwy 72 N, Loudon, TN. www.mcgillclick.com
Of his mother, Drew Smalls (son of Andy and Kathryn) says the following: “I had the most caring, loving mom any man could have. She was beautiful inside and out and always treated everyone with dignity.”

Past…
On Friday, July 29 2022, after much thought and a bit of sadness, Andy discontinued his weekly radio program on WLIL 102.7 FM. The program was called Marshal Andy Presents and had aired since 2013. Along with co-hosts Cindy Jo Brown and Danny Hutchins (former piano player for Charlie Pride), The Knoxville Cowboy and his sidekicks played older country music and provided background and commentary about the featured artist of the week and particular song being played. In-studio performances were also occasionally part of the weekly lineup. The show aired every Friday morning at 10:30 am.

Marshal Andy on Local Television
(If you are visiting this website for the first time, please click here for essential summary information concerning the barber shop.)
It was in 1983 that Smalls began a side gig as Marshal Andy – a cowboy persona host of a weekly television show called Marshal Andy & Riders of the Silver Screen. Having aired on FOX 43 for three years and WTVK (now WVLT) for four years, the show has had an uninterrupted run on the Knoxville PBS station (WKOP Channel 15) since 1990. The show airs each Saturday morning at 10:30 am and features B westerns, serials, and cartoons much as they were featured in Andy’s youth. Musical performances by Marshal Andy and The Riders of the Silver Screen Band are a part of the show as well.
