Marshal Andy and Friends – The Loudon Sessions: Episode 2 02/18/23
Part One – “I’ll Hold You in My Heart (Till I Can Hold You in My Arms)”
Written by Eddy Arnold, Hal Horton and Tommy Dilbeck and first recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1947, “I’ll Hold You in My Heart (Till I Can Hold You in My Arms)” was Arnold’s third number one on the Billboard Juke Box Folk Records chart. The song spent 46 weeks on the chart and 21 weeks at number one. It served as his first crossover hit, peaking at number 22 on the Billboard Best Sellers in Stores chart. Marshal Andy and I performed it, alternating sections.
Part Two – “Feels So Right”
“Feels So Right” is a song written by Randy Owen, and recorded by Alabama. It was released in May 1981 as the second single and title track from the band’s album Feels So Right. It was the group’s fourth straight No. 1 single (and first multi-week No. 1) on the Billboard magazine Hot Country Singles chart. In this video, Marshal Andy provides a bit of harmony as his son Drew sings the lyrics.

The Interview
During this conversation, Marshal Andy and I discussed “Eddy’s Song” and other subjects such as the origins of western swing music and Marshal Andy’s childhood love for B westerns of his youth.
“Eddy’s Song”
The lyrics that make up “Eddy’s Song” contain the titles of Arnold’s best-known songs to that time, intertwined to affirm a man’s dedication to his significant other. Included in the song’s lyrics are the titles of twenty-one number one hits he had achieved as of 1952. The titles are “Lovebug Itch,” “Molly Darling,” “I Wanna Play House With You,” “Take Me in Your Arms and Hold Me,” “Bouquet Of Roses,” “Anytime,” “There’s No Wings On My Angel,” “Easy on the Eyes,” “There’s Been a Change in Me,” “A Full Time Job,” “That’s How Much I Love You,” “It’s a Sin,” “What Is Life Without Love,” “Just a Little Lovin’ (Will Go a Long Way),” “Older and Bolder,” “Don’t Ever Take the Ribbons From Your Hair,” “Rockin’ Alone,” “Easy Rockin’ Chair,” “Don’t Rob Another Man’s Castle,” “Chained to a Memory,” “Bundle of Southern Sunshine” and “Cuddle Buggin’ Baby.”
“Eddy’s Song” – Rehearsal
I didn’t realize the video camera was recording while we were preparing to perform the song. I thought it would be neat to include it anyway.

In Memory of Kathryn Yarbrough Smalls

Kathryn Yarbrough Smalls, age 85 of Loudon, passed away peacefully at her home, Sunday, July 1, 2018. Kathryn was born in Savannah, GA to the late Thomas L. and Eileen (McDonald) Yarbrough. She grew up in Charleston, SC and was drawn to the charisma of the unique southern town. While there, she loved modeling the newest fashions for the garment industry and enjoyed a career in finance serving the automotive industry until she married her life partner Andy, June 29, 1957. Together they enjoyed a love story that spanned 61 years. They were devoted to each other and had many adventures together, living and working in big cities and small towns. Kathryn and Andy had three children; she adored them and was a devoted mother as well. After the children were raised she launched a career in the cosmetic and fragrance industry in the Knoxville area. The Smalls’ were members of St. James Episcopal Church in Knoxville. These last years were spent calling Loudon their home, even though Kathryn stayed connected to her city of Charleston. She was a true southern lady, beautiful inside and out. She always greeted you with a warm smile and always treated others with kindness. When asked, Andy said “she possessed the innocence of a new born child and the beauty of a Southern Belle” If you were speaking to Kathryn, she would tell you that she was so proud to be the wife of “Marshal Andy”. In addition to her parents, Kathryn was preceded in death by her son, Thomas Scott Smalls; her daughter, Lucy Ann “Luann” Smalls and brother, Tommy Yarbrough. She is survived by her beloved husband, Andrew J. Smalls and beloved and devoted son, Drew J. Smalls, both of Loudon; brother in-law and wife, Joe and Betty Smalls, Conway, SC and a multitude of friends. Services honoring and remembering Kathryn Smalls will be held 5:00 PM Sunday, July 8th, McGill Click Chapel, with Rev. Jack Pennington officiating. Memorial Contributions may be directed to East Tennessee Public Television, 1611 E. Magnolia Ave. Knoxville, TN 37917. The family will receive friends 2:00 – 5:00 PM Sunday prior to the service at McGill Click Funerals & Cremations, 1366 Hwy 72 N, Loudon, TN. www.mcgillclick.com
Of his mother, Drew Smalls (son of Andy and Kathryn) says the following: “I had the most caring, loving mom any man could have. She was beautiful inside and out and always treated everyone with dignity.”
